About
Lucreia Bennett, MA, RHIA, CCS, CPC – The CodeMasterCoach, “Your Medical Coding Tutor”
I created CodeMasterCoach in 2009. I worked in the Health Information Management profession for more than 20 years and I knew I wanted more. I have worked as an Assistant Director of Health Information Management, a Director of Health Information Management, a Consultant and even taught on the college level, but I just was not satisfied. I have worked in acute care, rehabilitation care and even outpatient care. I would often say, “I am proud to say, 20 years later, that I am still doing what I went to college for. So, I don’t feel bad paying back those student loans.” I still feel that way today!
Medical coding was really growing and it intrigued me, but it was a challenge for me in school. As the Director of Health Information Management, I supervised medical coders but I did not feel competent in my coding skills. So, I decided to do something about it! I knew with medical coding, I could work from home and that really excited me. I was tired of driving 1-2 hours one way to work. But, where do I start?
I had already been taught medical coding in school and I knew what it was, I just did not stay current. So, I put together a plan, to relearn medical coding. When I was in my coding classes, I was lost. I managed to learn enough to pass the class but I was lost. So, I was determined to relearn medical coding but make it fun and understandable. That’s how CodeMasterCoach was created.
My Passion
Course creation is my passion. I love creating courses that teach medical coding, but in a way that makes it understandable. There are too many online medical coding programs that just throw the books and an overview to the student, but that do not break down the information in a learnable fashion. I like to take a concept and break it down into learnable chunks so that the student understands. I love seeing the “light bulb” come on in my students eyes.
My Goals
My goal for this website it to have an avenue that will allow me to share information with individuals who have an interest in the world of “Medical Coding”. Through this website, I hope to share articles, videos, lesson plans, etc. I know students learn in different ways. Some students need hands-on, while others learn by hearing. I learn best by writing things down. So, my goal is to present information in a variety of ways in hopes to open more avenues to the profession of medical coding.
